Flash Photography
Flash photography can be as simple as activating the built in strobe
on your camera, or as complex as using multiple, high-powered flash units which are controlled and synchronized by radio receivers.
In the railroad environment, there are times when the available light just isn’t there, so we break out the
“portable sun” and fire away!

This photograph was taken while I worked as an engineer for the Canadian
National. It is August, 2005, and we were waiting for authority to enter the CN at Pekin, IL. The train was delivered by the
BNSF to North Pekin. We took over for the rest of this train's trip to Decatur, IL where the train was delivered to Tate&Lyle
(formerly A.E. Staley). Equipment - Nikon FE-2, set on a small tripod that I carried with me for such occasions. Exposure
– Approximately 45 seconds @ f8. Lighting - #5 flashbulbs in a Graflex 2 cell flashgun were used to illuminate the side
of the locomotive. David P. Allenson
The Wisconsin and Southern’s ABA set of E units are at Spring
Grove, Illinois on August 24, 2008. The units spent the night here and continued on to Janesville the next day. We were so
caught up with photographing the E units that we didn’t even think about the Janesville to Chicago freight until we
heard the horn in the distance. There was no time to reposition the strobes, so the end result was this “grab shot”.
As with daylight photography, when a surprise situation presents itself, just shoot anyway. Sometimes the results are pretty
good. Equipment – Nikon D200. Exposure – 1/13th second, f5.6, ISO 800. Lighting – Five Metz 402 strobes
fired with Pocket Wizard Plus II radio units. R.R. Conway – Ken Caflisch

Colorado and Southern U30C #890 is in Kansas City, Missouri
on March 7, 2009. The unit is not a former C&S locomotive at all, but in reality is former Detroit Edison #011. A couple
of individuals with too much time on their hands decided to put a lot of effort and money into repainting the unit in the
Burlington Route’s “Chinese Red” color scheme for fun. The locomotive was scrapped a few months later! Both photos - Karl Samson
